My name is Verdiane YEMATA, I am a student at the University of Yaounde I in Cameroon, pursuing a Ph.D in medical anthropology, and now currently an exchange student at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I am very excited and happy to have been given this opportunity to study here because I like the way Japan remains strongly linked to its culture. So, as a culture lover, I would like to discover many things about Japanese culture like language, religion, customs, behaviors, rituals and practices, clothes and traditional meals, etc. I would like to find how a people could develop while jealously keeping their nature, so I could transmit these values when I return to my country. The way everybody is welcoming here at TUFS is just amazing.

My name is MBURUKAGA Moses Richard Anthony, I prefer to be called Mburukaga. I am a South Sudanese. I am a student at Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (PIASS) Rwanda, in the faculty of development studies, majoring in peacebuilding and development.
I like playing basketball, interacting with friends, working out my personal works, watching educative and political movies, reading books that inspires me or add values to myself, motivated to make positive change in any way in my surrounding (my community or environment where I live) .
As a young motivated person to make social change in my country, my aim of coming to Japan is to learn from the postwar reconstruction process of Japan and how this can help in the reconstruction process my country (South Sudan) is undertaking now in the post-civil war. And also, to learn new ways of life oversea that can help in my personal development and be exposed to new life, intercultural tolerance as it is one of the issues my country is facing not knowing how to tolerate the cultures of others.

My name is Nyampinga Marie Grace, Rwandan, and a student majoring in Peacebuilding and Development in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Science (PIASS).
My interest is to learn more about the linkage and similarities of post-war reconstruction and reconciliation after WWII and the peacebuilding process in Japan and my country Rwanda as both experienced violent conflict and now Japan is a developed country while Rwanda is still undergoing the process. I am very interested in learning about Japanese culture and interacting with people from different diverse around the world present at the university through joining different clubs and taking courses as well as visiting different museums and historical sites.

I am Toose Muzungaile, a graduate student from the university of Zambia. My field of study is human nutrition. Nutrition is a field that has no boundaries, as it cuts across all cultures.
Participating in the ISEP at TUFS is important for me as it will give me an opportunity to interact with fellow students from all over the globe, and help me become a more globally conscious and caring citizen back in Zambia. It will change my way of thinking, open new horizons and let me learn social and culture aspects and how I can apply them in my field of study. It will also give me an opportunity to learn and to share knowledge with others based on what I have studied and my experience in my field of study.

I am Boakye-Tetteh Rosemond, a combined major student of History and Political Science at the most prestigious university in Ghana, the UNIVERSITY OF GHANA.
I find this program extremely crucial since I understand the magnitude of impact it would have on my entire educational and professional journey. For instance, as a History student, meeting and sharing same space with different scholars across the world would provide a platform for learning new cultures and languages. Again, our period here promises to be educative such that, diverse courses are designed to stimulate the minds of youngters and generate academic discourses which I truly find it delightful especially coming from Political Science background.
I am particularly enthused about this program for the fact that, I would finally return and share my knowledge and experiences with my colleagues while I improve my public speaking and communication skills. I am Vrishthi Dhanlall, a South African student currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Criminology and Psychology at the University of Pretoria.
As a student of Criminology I am particularly interested in studying the culture, attitudes and policies in Japan that have lead to it having an such an astoundingly low crime rate in comparison to the rest of the world.
On a more personal level, I am incredibly excited to be experiencing Japan via this exchange as someone who regularly engages with Japanese media via film and music. It is truly surreal to be in the places where my favorite movies were shot and favorite songs were recorded.

My name is Julia Visser, and I’m a student from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. I belong to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and am currently studying towards a degree in Humanities with majors in Geography, English Studies and Visual Studies.
Although I reside in a European-styled University town in the Western Cape; I’m originally from a very different but beautiful part of South Africa. I grew up largely amidst the plantations of Mpumalanga province in the northeast of the country, between small towns. In fact, for the most part, I was always within a 20-minute drive from the Kruger National Park!
Studying at Stellenbosch University has been a considerable feat, but coming to the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, is a lifelong dream come true! I plan to learn more about Japanese arts, culture and society, and certainly improve my Japanese language skills. I am eager to explore Japan’s innovative systems of sustainability, and how knowledge may be interchanged within Japan-Africa relations. Venturing around the metropolis of Tokyo is exhilarating, yet I hope to visit rural spaces and areas of cultural significance during my stay here.

As a student in environmental management, my interest in Japan is to learn from the environmental protection measures and mechanisms of Japan (the developed country) and the lessons to teach Rwanda as a developing country.
I am very happy also to be in Japan as I was dreaming to join this country as a Karate player since my childhood because I found that it is the origin of karate and I can say that my dreams came true.

I love working in teams which has grown from football teams inspirations and group works at school, I like interactions and exchanges because I learn new things and grow.
I am overjoyed to have been given this opportunity to come to Japan as an exchange student at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) and would wish to write this message in Japanese, but my level is still low where currently, I know a few words in Japanese such as “Ohayo-guzaimasu”, “Konnichiwa”, “Konbawa”, “Arigato Guzaimasu”, “Sayonara”, “Oyasumi”, “Genki-desu” and “Doo-itashimashite”, and learning Japanese has come on top among my priorities to raise the language ability.
I wish to learn the cultural solutions in Japan’s re-construction process, global studies on contemporary issues for gaining lessons to take home and having good knowledge of Japan in the context of language, norms and values, religion, and social interactions. I am very interested to learn different courses, joining available clubs at TUFS as well visiting historical and cultural museums of Japan to grow deeper.

Moreover, as a Congolese lady who lives in the Great Lakes Region where conflicts can arise and also in others regions of Africa, therefore, being in Japan is a great opportunity for me to learn about the Japanese mechanisms of development. As we have learnt about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I would like to enlarge my knowledge in their government policies and also their culture. My interest in Japan is to further my knowledge about the development process and the peace building process.
Furthermore, to be in Japan is really beneficial, and I am grateful for that, also, it is an opportunity to improve my intercultural communication skills, because I am really passionate in learning other people’s cultures and languages, and I like to write down poems.

I am Emmanuel Wepngong JATO a Cameroonian by birth pursuing Peace and Conflict Studies at the Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Science (PIASS) in Rwanda. I was selected for the exchange program at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Spring program 2022. My interest is to learn about the peacebuilding process of Japan from the violence and trauma due to WWII to the current peaceful state and economic development of the country. I am Kani Bahoya Paul, a Congolese student majoring in peace and conflict studies at Protestant institute of art and Social sciences (PIASS) in Rwanda. I am a filmmaker, painter, and graphic designer. By connecting my academic interest, my skills, and social life; I hope to learn from my fellow colleagues, lecturers as well as the host community how Japanese culture operates and what Japanese foreign policy toward Africa is like. Most importantly, I want to get involved at Tokyo University of Foreign Study (TUFS) by joining clubs related to my skills of interest. As I am fascinated with the development process of Japan and its historical challenges; I wish to learn more on this aspect by visiting museums and other historical areas.
