• The CEFR-J Project is a cover term for the following KAKEN projects funded by JSPS. Recently the CEFR-J has been maintained by two PIs: Yukio Tono and Masashi Negishi at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS). TUFS supports our project in terms of resource development as well as the dissemination of the CEFR-J in Japan.

  • The construction of pipelines for creating multilingual resources based on the CEFR-J
    • Prototype data for the CEFR-J x 28 Wordlists automatically converted from the English wordlist into 27 other languages using Google Translate.
  • The construction of multilingual resources:
    • The translated versions of the Phrase/Sentence database based on Threshold Levels and the Core Inventory
    • The automatically translated versions of the English tests for evaluation purposes

  • The construction of the CEFR-J Can-Do Test Battery
    • A battery of performance tests based on 100 illustrative descriptors for English
    • 10 sub-levels [Per-A1/A1.1/A1.2/A1.3/A2.1/A2.2/B1.1/B1.2/B2.1/B2.2]
    • 5 modes of communication [listening/reading/spoken interaction/spoken production/writing]
    • A majority of the items were tried out and accompanied by IRT results and possible suggestions for revision.
