"Doing Fieldwork through an Exhibition: A Case from the Philippines, 2025"

2025.09.18 update

Although anthropologists have taken countless photographs during their fieldwork, most of them usually remain unseen. The "Doing Fieldwork through an Exhibition" project brings these photographs to light. Using images taken by a cultural anthropologist in the field, workshop participants created “composite photographs” by arranging multiple images together in space, which are now presented in this exhibition. By looking closely at these composite photographs, we hope you enjoy experiencing how anthropologists begin to think from the “mundane everyday scenes” of the field.

The second exhibition, "The Philippines 2025", explores the Philippines through photography. It features images taken by Masato Ushimaru during his fieldwork on communities of visually impaired people in the Philippines, edited into composite works by Kunitaro Inoue, Masato Ushimaru, Hirohito Tsuda, Riho Hasegawa, and Shu Fujita.

On the opening day, Sunday, October 12, we will hold a talk event with guest curator Waxogawa/Rakuki Ogawa and the editors (Masato Ushimaru, Kunitaro Inoue, Hirohito Tsuda, Riho Hasegawa, and Shu Fujita).

In addition, there will be a special screening of OUR CO-BLIND – An Ethnography of Care among Visually Impaired Communities in Baguio, a film directed by Mr. Ushimaru (see here for details).
