TUFS Cinema 火と農業の映画特集「地球は自分を誰だと思っているのか？（火になる）」/“Who Does the Earth Think It Is? (Becoming Fire)”

東京外国語大学TUFS Cinemaは、映画を通じ、世界の諸地域における社会･歴史･文化の理解を深めることを目的として行われています。今回の特集では、日本の近畿地方における焼畑と炭焼きに焦点を当てた作品「地球は自分を誰だと思っているのか？」を上映し、ラウンドテーブルでは監督と実際に火を使った農業を実践している研究者を交えながら、アートと農業生態学の視点からこの問いについて考えます。

TUFS Cinema aims to deepen understanding of social, historical, and cultural aspects in various regions of the world through film screening. This time, the film "Who Does the Earth Think It Is?" will be screened, focusing on swidden agriculture and charcoal making in the present-day Kinki region of Japan. Following the screening, a roundtable discussion will take place with the director Elke Marhöfer, exploring the question from the perspectives of art and agroecology.

あらすじ

世界中で、「火は自然を損なう」という考えから、火を使った農業は抑制されたり禁止されている。しかし、火は生命を育むものでもある。この映画は、日本における薪炭生産や焼畑農業と里山をフィールドに、高度経済成長期に「絶滅」寸前にまで抑圧されてきた土着の環境利用を扱っている。これらの火の使用をともなった景観形成に共通するのは、しばしば人間以外の様々な生き物にも生きる場を提供していたことである。この映画では、それらの生き物たちとの関わりを含めて農山村における「火」を捉え直す。

Throughout the world, there are restrictions on agricultural practices involving the use of fire due to the belief that fire harms nature. However, fire is also a force that nurtures life. This film demonstrates the significance of fire in a Satoyama ecosystem by exploring the lifeworlds of charcoal making and swidden agriculture in Japan.

本作について

ドイツ出身のElke Marhöfer監督は、京都大学大学院への長期留学の中で、里山の景観形成について「火」の生態学の視点から研究をおこないました。彼女はただ日本の山村を研究するだけではなく、焼畑や炭焼きの営みを16ミリのカラーフィルムに撮影し、映画作品として発表されました。今回上映する「地球は自分を誰だと思っているのか？」は、滋賀県長浜市余呉町の焼畑と京都府宮津市上世谷地区の炭焼きに焦点を当てて、火を使った農の営みへの人間以外の存在の関与を浮き彫りにしています。日本の焼畑は戦前から、炭焼きはエネルギー革命後に、それぞれ衰退と部分的な復興を繰り返しながら今に至っています。監督を囲んでのラウンドテーブルでは、日本とヨーロッパとの比較の視点も交えつつ、森林と人間の関わりやアートと環境について考えてみたいと思います。

Director Elke Marhöfer, originally from Germany, captured the practices of swidden agriculture and charcoal making on 16mm color film. The film "Who Does the Earth Think It Is? (Becoming fire)", highlights the involvement of non-human entities in the agricultural practices that utilize fire. Japanese swidden agriculture has experienced periods of decline and partial revival since pre-war times, while charcoal making has gone through similar cycles after the energy revolution, leading up to the present day. In the roundtable discussion with the director, we will explore the relationship between forests and humans, as well as contemplate the intersection of art and the environment, incorporating a comparative perspective between Japan and Europe.

トークセッション登壇者のご紹介

Elke Marhöfer, ph.D.

独立アーティスト。景観生態学の研究者でありかつ映像作家。現在シチリア島に住み、在来農業の実践や動植物に関わる概念を研究。環境と技術の一貫性を強調した、芸術とメディアに対する新たな視点を提供しようとしている。今回上映作品以外に、「近すぎて遠い(Too close too far)」（2020）、「野蚕（Wild Silkworm）」（2018）などがあり、ロンドン映画祭、ロッテルダム国際映画祭など世界各地で上映されている。

Elke Marhöfer, Ph.D.（University of Gothenburg）, is a filmmaker and researcher, currently living in Sicily. She investigates traditional agricultural practices, and notions of animals and plants. She offers a fresh view on art and media that emphasizes the consistency between environment and technology. Her films have been screened globally, including BFI-Film Festival London and International Film Festival Rotterdam.

鈴木玲治（すずき れいじ）

京都先端科学大学バイオ環境学部里山環境研究室教授。
北九州市生まれ。2001年以降、東南アジア及び日本の焼畑研究に従事し、2009年より自らも滋賀県余呉町で焼畑を営む。近年は、日本各地の焼畑実践地を訪問し、焼畑による日本の食・森・地域の再生の可能性を探る。

Reiji SUZUKI: Professor, Satoyama Environment Research Laboratory, Faculty of Bioenvironmental Science, Kyoto Institute of Advanced Science and Technology.
Born in Kitakyushu City. Since 2001, he has been engaged in research on swidden agriculture in Southeast Asia and Japan. Since 2009, he has also been practicing swidden agriculture in Yugo-cho, Shiga Prefecture. In recent years, he has been visiting various swidden sites across Japan, exploring the potential of swidden agriculture for the revitalization of Japanese food, forests, and local communities.

石倉敏明（いしくら としあき）

1974年東京生まれ。秋田公立美術大学准教授。環太平洋の比較神話学、複数種をめぐる芸術人類学、アーティストとの共同制作をおこなう。第58回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ日本館展示「Cosmo-Eggs | 宇宙の卵」（2019年）に参加。共著に『野生めぐり 列島神話の源流に触れる12の旅』（田附勝共著、淡交社、2015年）、『Lexicon現代人類学』（奥野克巳との共編著、以文社、2018年）など。

Toshiaki ISHIKURA: Born in Tokyo in 1974. He is an Associate Professor at Akita University of Art. His research interests include comparative mythology in the Pacific Rim, anthropological studies revolving around multiple species, and collaborative projects with artists. He participated in the 58th Venice Biennale Japanese Pavilion exhibition "Cosmo-Eggs | 宇宙の卵" in 2019. His co-authored works include "Wilderness Journeys: 12 Voyages into the Origins of Archipelagic Mythology" (co-authored with Masaru Tazuke, Tankosha, 2015) and "Lexicon: Contemporary Anthropology" (co-edited with Katsumi Okuno, Iwanami Shoten, 2018).
