Changes in Eligibility for Tuition Fee Exemption for Students Who Experience a Sudden Change in Household Finances Due to COVID-19

TUFS has provided tuition fee exemptions for students who have suffered a sudden change in their financial circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic since 2021. However, the government has changed the rules regarding the budget used to implement this tuition exemption. Therefore, the following changes will be implemented to each category from April 2024.

• Changes to the “Sudden change in finances due to COVID19 (α)” category
  This tuition fee exemption will be granted from April 2024, only to those students who were eligible for the tuition fee exemption in the second half of the 2023 academic year and who continue to meet the same eligibility conditions.
  Therefore, it will not be possible to newly apply for the “Sudden change in finances due to COVID19 (α)” tuition exemption after April 2024.
• Changes to the “Sudden change in finances due to COVID19 (β)” category
  Privately financed international students who enrolled in an undergraduate course after April 2023 were exempt from tuition fees if they met the eligibility conditions of the “Sudden change in finances due to COVID19 (β)” category, however, this category will no longer be available from April 2024. Therefore, privately financed international students who enrolled in an undergraduate course after April 2023 will no longer be eligible for this tuition fee exemption.

However, students may apply for a tuition fee exemption if the student’s main financial supporter has died within the past 6 months, or if the student’s (or his/her family’s) home has been destroyed by a typhoon, fire, tsunami, or earthquake etc., in the past 6 months.
