Title: "Why Coffee Needs a Geography: Mapping Meaning from Asia to Africa"
Abstract: This talk introduces Coffee Geography as a new field exploring how coffee's journeys, stories, and sensory encounters shape places and identities across Asia and Africa.
Blending narrative and sensory analysis, I argue that coffee offers unique insights into how commodities connect people, create imagined geographies, and reshape our world. Coffee Geography situates coffee within the broader context of human and cultural geography, emphasizing its role as both a global commodity and a moving signifier.
By examining the layered histories and narratives attached to coffee--from its African origins to its reinvention in Asian contexts--I demonstrate how coffee mediates spatial meaning, social belonging, and cultural imagination. Through case studies and ethnographic examples, I illustrate how coffee practices foster new connections and re-map relationships between distant regions.
Ultimately, this talk calls for a more reflexive and sensory-oriented approach to understanding commodities, showing that even an everyday drink like coffee can transform the way we think about space, identity, and global connection.
