| Research Interest | My research examines different subtitle translations of Japanese films into English to explore how subtitles can portray different versions of Japan to audiences in South Africa and beyond. From Rashomon (1950) to the present day, with titles such as The Boy and the Heron (2023), widely acclaimed Japanese films have often provided audiences with a first glimpse into Japanese culture. I explore how the lens of subtitle translation shapes these images of Japan and mediates how Japanese culture is presented abroad. I particularly focus on the multilingual, multicultural context of South Africa, where Japanese media has been present in entertainment since the late 1970s and became a staple from the 1980s onward. Treating subtitles not simply as film translation but as a form of intercultural mediation, I examine the role of cinema in shaping cultural understanding between Japan and South Africa. |
