At the 2nd Research Meeting of the ICJS Comparative Japanese Culture Division, Tomoe Ishida (research fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) and Matias Chiappe (government sponsored foreign student, JLC TUFS) gave presentations.
Ms. Ishida, a cultural anthropologist, presented"Images of and Discourse on'Japan'and the Position of Nikkei Argentinians". Starting with the history and makeup of the Nikkei community, she covered their duality ("Japanese" to Argentinians, "Argentinian" to Japanese) and the shifting interest towards Japan and the Orient in academia. Next, Matias explained the historical influences of Latin American literature on modern Japanese literature.
