14:00-17:40, Saturday, 9 July 2016
Room 419 (Conference room, the Institute of Language Research) 4F,
Research and Lecture Building, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Fuchu Campus)
Ryuko TANIGUCHI(TUFS) 'Some research Approaches to the study of Apology'
Masashi NEGISHI(TUFS) 'Are Japanese people that uninterested in articles?'
Tomoaki SEINO (Chiba University) ' Contrastive study of Expression of emotion in
Japanese and German Languages'

First, Professor Taniguchi introduced the outline about the history of study of
Apology expressions. Then, she referred to the frequency of se and strategies of
expression of apology. And due to the difference in such frequency and strategies
among languages, it will lead to intercultural friction.
In addition, she introduced the style of apology of the governments of Australia,
Taiwan and Japan.

Then professor Negishi reported some findings on the acquisition of English articles
by Japanese English language learners who find it difficult to study. The reason of this
difficulty lays in the absence of such articles in Japanese language, the complexity of
the concept of articles, the difference of how Japanese and English languages deal with
the plurality concept, and the problem of teaching methods of foreign languages.

Professor Seino presented 3 types of Expressions of emotion in German language. He
used an example of an expression that refer to the feeling of 'delight'. In result, one
type has been found to be used as a prototype and that there is restriction in the use of
pronouns. On the other hand, another type was found to be used to describe the
objectivity of emotions. The third type was found to be in the middle, belonging to
neither of the previous types.
