Speakers:
Satoru KUBOTA (Nara Prefectural University)
Tomoko TAKASHIMA (TUFS)

17:40-19:10, Friday, June 26, 2015
Room 104, Research and Lecture Building, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Fuchu Campus)

The seminar, hosted by the social linguistics division, consisted of two lectures on research results from the MEXT/JSPS KAKHENHI (B) (23310176)
"Japanese as a bond" project.

Tomoko TAKASHIMA (TUFS) presented"The bonds of language seen through the experiences of repatriates- Amamian repatriates from Taiwan", describing the results of surveys of Amami natives who emigrated to Taiwan and who were repatriated after WWII.
Such peripheral areas were the focus of greater promotion of the Japanese language than were central areas.

Satoru KUBOTA (Nara Prefectural University) presented "Language use by people of Japanese descent in the Dominican Republic".Having established the state of language use and acquisition, he examined the position of language for second and third generation migrants from the perspective of homeland ties.

Emigrants still show dedication to Japanese and attempt to maintain links with Japan by maintaining the Japanese language.
