"How stories are made ? Boris Pilnyak and Japan" was lectured by Prof. Kyoko NUMANO (TUFS) .

Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938) was a leading author in the Soviet sphereduring the early 1920s but was later executed after being denounced as "anti-Soviet".

Professor NUMANO placed Pilnyak in Russian literary history and also analyzed Pilnyak's short works on his two visits to Japan.
These include criticism of Japan's I-novels, rejection of the literary world and a sense of distance towards the Orient.

The lecture, attended by outside researchers and Russian study abroad students,
proved to be fascinating and convincing and was followed by a lively question and answer session.
