Joint Researchers Workshop Report "Contrastive Analysis of Japanese and Indonesian Passive Sentences" (July 17, 2014)

Lecturer: Dedi Sutedi (Associate Professor, Indonesia University of Education)
Commentator: Masashi FURIHATA(TUFS)

Dedi Sutedi, associate professor at Indonesia University of Education, the guest researcher in the Hakuho Foundation's 8th International Joint Research Project, gave a presentation on "Contrastive Research into Passive Constructions in Japanese and Indonesian".

Language learners have a strong tendency to assume that "passive constructions" equate to "the passive form"and"-reru/-rareru". This often leads to errors by Japanese learners of Indonesian and vise versa.

Professor Dedi has long been involved in contrastive research concerning the teaching of Japanese passive constructions to Indonesian learners, and has analyzed these constructions from a variety of perspectives, contrasting them with passive structures in Indonesian.

The presentation affirmed the value of basic research into complex grammatical features.
