International Symposium -"Three clues around Kyokutei Bakin: Vernacular Chinese (hakuwa) literature, Theatrical representation and Vietnam literature" (15 December 2011)

Lecturers and titles:
Masayuki Kanda (Meiji University)
"Bakin, 'Edo Writer' of the Kasei Tempo Period"
Kristian Bering (completed PhD course at London SOAS, Assistant Professor, Osaka University Office for University-Industry Collaboration)
"Genre Development in the Kansei Kyowa Period and the Role of Bakin - dramaticality and theatricality"
Kenichi Kawaguchi (TUFS)
"Bakin and Nguyễn Du - their works"

On 15 December (Thu), the Comparative Japanese Culture Division and the International Cooperation Division co-hosted the above international symposium in the medium conference room, 2F administration offices.

It was a symposium on contrastive methodologies as Prof. Kanda demonstrated through a thorough research on philology and Prof. Bering analyzed expressions using a rich variety of kibyoshi (Japanese picture book). Prof. Kawaguchi raised issues from the perspective of international literature research. All three reports were stimulating, and based on sound methodologies that traversed the edge of literature research. Bakin's literature is long and massive but through the succinct reports of the three lecturers, the audience gained a picture of Bakin which was different from the popular and common views. It was a symposium which captured the thrills and real charms of international literature research.( Comparative Japanese Culture Div.+International Cooperation Div.)
