Information Session on “Quarantine and Infectious Diseases while Travelling Abroad” held at TUFS

February 19, 2019

On Wednesday the 19th of December (2018), TUFS welcomed Section Manager Kumagai from the Quarantine Hygiene Division of the Tokyo Airport Quarantine Branch Office, Dr. Kurita from Tokyo Medical University’s Travel Clinic, and Dr. Yamamoto from the TUFS Health Care Center to give an information session on “Quarantine and Infectious Diseases while Travelling Abroad”. This information session was targeted at both students planning to study abroad, including long term exchanges and short visits, and students planning to travel abroad in general.

The session began with a talk from Dr. Yamamoto on things to check before going abroad, things to look out for when abroad, and coping with stress when abroad.
This was followed by a talk from Mr. Kumagai covering many topics such as pre-departure preparation against infectious diseases (getting vaccination certificates etc), mosquito-borne infectious diseases (namely malaria), ways of gathering information on infectious diseases (using the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s Quarantine Station website, “FORTH”), and the role of quarantine stations.
The session ended with a talk from Dr. Kurita, who discussed a range of topics such as where to find resources for health management when travelling overseas, health-related arrangements to make pre-departure, and health problems that could occur while overseas and their different causes (infectious diseases, change in climate/atmospheric pressure etc).
Over 220 students attended the session, showing their keen interest in health and safety when travelling abroad.

※The Student Exchange Division is hoping to hold similar sessions in the future and encourage those who could not attend this time to come to the next session.
