GJO Established at the University of Pretoria (South Africa)

On Thursday, September 13, 2018, a ceremony marking the establishment of the Global Japan Office (GJO) at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) was held.

The ceremony took place at the beginning of the first day of an international academic seminar ("TUFS-UP Seminar": 13 -14 September, 2018) held at the University of Pretoria. Mr. TAKEUCHI Shinichi, Director of the African Studies Center, announced the establishment of the GJO at the University of Pretoria and handed over a GJO plaque to the Deputy Dean of the university, Professor Maxi SCHOEMAN. Deputy Dean Schoeman introduced Mrs. Anita DEVCHAND, who will be taking up her new position at the GJO administrative office, and expressed her gratitude and hopes for further development in academic and research exchanges between the two universities.

The University of Pretoria is one of South Africa's 23 public universities, founded in 1908, and is one of the country's largest research universities. In the QS rankings, it is placed as one of the top 4 in the country and in the top 50 in BRICS. With Vision 2025 and it's five strategic goals, the University of Pretoria aims to increase their global presence and strengthen their partnerships with leading universities worldwide. The Faculty of Humanities has 17 departments, and in September 2015 the Center for Japanese Studies was established on the main campus.
