May 1, 2018

On Thursday, April 26, 2018, H.E. Mr. Gayrat Ganievich FAZILOV from the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Japan paid a courtesy visit to President TATEISHI Hirotaka to greet him in his new position as Ambassador to Japan. The meeting was also attended by Professor HAGIO Sho (President’s Task Force, International Affairs), Distinguished Professor KOMATSU Hisao (World Language and Society Education Centre, Modern and Contemporary History of Central Asia), Lecturer SHIMADA Shizuo (Institute of Global Studies, Central Asia Area Studies), and Specially Appointed Professor KIMURA Satoru (World Language and Society Education Centre, History of Central Asia).

TUFS has a long history with Uzbekistan, and in particular with the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies, where an international academic exchange agreement was signed in 1997. The two universities have since continued to maintain vibrant exchange activities, including student exchanges. In addition to the 38 exchange students TUFS has hosted and the 19 students that have been dispatched to Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies to date, many more exchange students (research students and students studying Japanese language and culture) funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) have been accepted to study at TUFS. At the meeting, the two sides discussed other possibilities for cultural exchange and agreed to continue building cooperative relations.

Following the discussion, Ambassador Fazilov observed an Uzbek language class at TUFS and exchanged views with faculty members from the Central Asia region, including Professor Abdirashidov ZAYNABIDIN (Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature), who is currently a foreign researcher at TUFS’s Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa.
