120 Years of Spanish Language Education Celebrated at TUFS

Over Friday the 27 th and Saturday the 28 th of October, an event was held commemorating 120 years since the beginning of Spanish language education here at TUFS.

On the first day of festivities, the 27 th , President Tateishi gave a speech on the history of Spanish language education at TUFS, after which the Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of Spain in Japan, Mr. Carlos Maldonado, and the Director of the Instituto Cervantes, Víctor Ugarte Farrerons, gave an address. After this, writer and translator José Pazó (the great-grandchild of third-generation Spanish language teacher Gonzalo Jiménez de la Espada), who flew in from Spain for the event, donated documents written by Jiménez de la Espada during his time enrolled at TUFS, and held a lecture titled 'Bridge, People, Literature.'

On the second day of the event, the 28 th , a keynote speech on 'The History of Spanish Language Education at TUFS' was given by TUFS emeritus professor Hideki Terasaki, which was followed by two symposiums in separate classrooms; one titled 'Let's Read a Book with a Translator,' the other on 'Reconsidering a Globalized Society through the Latin American Experience.'

The event was attended by many people, including TUFS Spanish Department alumni, and ended on a high note.
