Title: The Tokyo International Conference on African Development: Milestones and Prospects

Abstract: Since its inception in 1993, the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) has become one of the pillars in Japan-Africa relations. Over the years the forum has expanded in scope and agenda, yet its main objectives have centred on advancing growth through private sector activities; fostering African ownership and autonomy in development; promoting south-south cooperation; and encouraging knowledge transfer from Asia to Africa. TICAD has also been a vehicle for promoting the human security agenda in Japan-Africa relations. In current times, TICAD stands out among other international development forums for its inclusivity and emphasis on African agency in development. As a multistakeholder gathering it brings African leaders in dialogue with major partners including international and regional organisations, donors, the private sector and civil society. The recently concluded TICAD 8, held in Tunisia in August 2022, came at a critical juncture in international politics as well as Africa's development trajectory.
