【Call for Application】 Workshop "Curating Visual Anthropology: Multimodal Approaches in Applied Visual Anthropology"

About

This workshop is participatory and designed for researchers and artists interested in presenting their research findings using visual and multimodal methods. In this intensive applied participatory workshop we will discuss the latest approaches regarding multimodal methods in visual anthropology. As part of workshop activities participants will work on a small visual project (individually or in group) and will prepare it for an anthropological exhibition.

By the end of workshop participants will be familiar with:

  • Most important multimodal approaches and theories in visual anthropology,

  • Curating and curatorial theories and approaches in visual anthropology,

  • Basic practical elements of curating visual anthropological exhibitions.

Dates: March 5th to 9th (Sunday), 2025.

Lecturer: Dr. Pedram Khosronejad (Socio-Cultural Anthropologist & Curator, Adjunct Professor at the School of Social Sciences at Western Sydney University), Chief Editor of Journal "Visual Anthropology - Taylor & Francis". (His biography is provided at the end of the document.)

Eligible Participants

This workshop is open to researchers and artists who are interested in utilizing visual and multimodal methods to present their research findings. It is suitable for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including:

  • Researchers and academics (including Master's and PhD students) in fields such as cultural anthropology, visual anthropology, media studies, and related disciplines in social and natural sciences.

  • Artists, filmmakers, and curators working with visual materials in anthropological or ethnographic contexts.

  • Individuals engaged in interdisciplinary projects that incorporate visual storytelling and multimodal approaches.

Participants should have a keen interest in exploring innovative ways to communicate research through visual and curatorial practices. Both beginners and experienced individuals in video and photo editing, as well as curation, are welcome.

Fee: Free

Application Deadline: By the 20th of February. Participation in all dates is required in principle, and priority will be given to those who can attend all sessions.

We will notify you of your participation status within one or two weeks of registration. Regardless of the deadline, applications will be closed once the capacity is reached.

The outcomes of this workshop are planned to be submitted to the journal Visual Anthropology in collaboration with interested participants.

Day -2March 6 (Thursday)

Curating Visual Anthropology Materials (1)

In this session participants will learn about the basic elements of curating to curate an exhibition. This includes: design and layout of an exhibition, installation, lighting, labeling, exhibition narration, exhibition title, etc.
1:00 PM-5:30 PM

Hands on Visual Materials and Practical Practices

In this practical session participants will work on small visual projects (individually or in group) to prepare their materials for an exhibition plan that includes: photos, footage, sounds and sensory materials. Participants would work on selecting and editing their materials in line with their individual themes and the overarching theme of the exhibition discussed on the day.

Day- 3March 7 (Friday)

Curating Visual Anthropology Materials (2)

Participants will present their processed materials to the group or class, and together, they will discuss and plan how to present them in the exhibition.

Based on this discussion, time should be allocated for further editing of photos, videos, and audio. This would be followed by printing photographs, exporting videos, and finalizing audio files.

In this session participants will collaborate in installation of their works and the preparation of exhibition for the opening.

Lecturer's Biography

He has twenty years of intellectual and leadership experience around the world (France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan, United States, Australia and Iran)--spanning curatorial and museum activities, teaching and research, and public engagement programs for several universities and cultural institutions. Between July 2020 and January 2023 Professor Khosronejad worked as the Curator of Persian Arts at Powerhouse Ultimo. Prior to this he was Associate Director of Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies at Oklahoma State University in the United States (2015-19) and the Goli Rais Larizadeh Chair of the Iran Heritage Foundation for the Anthropology of Iran in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland (2007-15).

His curatorial, teaching and research activities to date have been multidisciplinary in scope, cutting across Visual Studies, Material Culture Studies, Curatorial Studies, and Visual Anthropology.

Professor Khosronejad interests include questions of contemporary visual art, multidisciplinary curatorial approaches, museum migration collections, and the history of photography in relation to gender, sexuality, and race. In particular, he explores the manners by which art, memory, and material culture are bound up in, as well as influenced and altered by wider political, social, and cultural trends.
