Dr. Henrietta visited Utoro and migration-related facilities in Kyoto

November 19, 2025

Our invited researcher, Dr. Henrietta Nyamnjoh, visited Utoro and migration-related facilities in Kyoto on November 19, 2025.

She exchanged views with Professor Wako Asato (Kyoto University) and Professor Aki Sohn (Ritsumeikan University), who also kindly guided her through various migration-related facilities in Kyoto.

In the morning, Professor Aki Sohn showed her around the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum. Although it was closed that day, she was given special access to the exhibition. She was also kindly offered an opportunity to share tea and talk with elderly residents living nearby.

In the afternoon, Professor Wako Asato guided her to the following sites: (1) Wakaba, an introductory Japanese-language classroom for migrant children, along with the Kyoto City Board of Education; (2) a community café (Hokkori) where migrants gather; (3) the Kyoto City Community and Multicultural Exchange Network Salon (children's center), where migrant children meet after school; and (4) a psychiatric hospital where migrant patients are hospitalized. At Wakaba, we observed a class and staff members from the Kyoto City Board of Education explained the city's initiatives and engaged in an exchange of views with us.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Wako Asato and Professor Aki Sohn for arranging the visits to each site, and to everyone who kindly shared time with us at each place. We also extend our deep thanks to Professor Motoji Matsuda (Research Institute for Humanity and Nature) for creating this valuable opportunity for exchange.
