自己紹介 / Biography

専門領域はアメリカ小説全般です。とくに２０世紀アメリカ最大の作家であるウィリアム・フォークナーなどのアングロ＝アメリカン・モダニズムの作家と１９世紀アメリカの古典作家について研究してきました。メルヴィル、ディキンソン、ポーなどの古典作家を好みますが、元来は現代小説を専門としていましたから、今後現代文学・文化に重点を置いた研究をすることもあり得ると思っています。アメリカ詩の愛好者でもあり、一部の現代詩人や１９世紀の代表的な詩人についてはある程度の理解があるつもりです。高校時代に出会ったポーやメルヴィル、大学時代に圧倒されたフォークナーなどは、アメリカ作家のなかでも特別に優れているとの判断から、研究の中心的な課題としてきました。
趣味的には、猫の飼育とならんで、文学・文化論・映像・音楽・美術などを国籍とジャンルを問わず愛好します。大学院時代から東大文学部助手時代までは、おもに現代小説、とくにウィリアム・フォークナーを研究していました。その後留学するなどして、１９世紀のハーマン・メルヴィルやナサニエル・ホーソーン、エドガー・A.・ポーなどの研究と批評理論に手を広げようとしてきました。留学したSUNY Buffaloや客員研究員をしていたUC Irvineでは、おもに批評理論と文学研究のかかわりを勉強しました。折に触れて批判にさらされる批評理論をあらためて真摯に受容し、研究・教育に役立てることは、大学院生時代から自分に課してきた課題だったのだと思います。この１０年ほどはなにかと狭苦しい状況もあり、海外の学会を転々と渡り歩きはしましたが、豊かな研究・教育活動ができたとは言えないと反省しきりです。外語大での研究・教育のために、諸外国の研究者たちと連携しつつ文学・文化研究が豊かに行われうる環境づくりを心がけ、より本格的な文学・文化・批評研究ができるようになればと願っています。

    American Gothic and Contemporary Literary Theory
    I am studying American gothic fiction from contemporary critical perspectives in its relation to philosophical, historical, and social situations of the period between late 18th century and the present.
