Caution about Ebola haemorrhagic fever

Date: September 8, 2014

Dear all,

As you all know, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is a quite severe problem.

Although there has been no case of Ebola infection in Japan, you should pay attention to infomation from the government and/or our university. If there is anyone who returned from Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone, he/she should be careful of the health conditions, and immediately inform the university in case you get below-mentioned symptoms.

*What is Ebola haemorrhagic fever?
Ebola isn't as contagious as more common viruses like colds, influenza, or measles. It spreads to people by contact with the skin or bodily fluids of an infected person.
At the early stage, Ebola can feel like the flu or other illnesses.
Symptoms show up 2 to 21 days after infection and usually include:
- High fever
- headache
- Joint and muscle aches
- Sore throat
- Stomach pain
- Lack of appetite

As the virus spreads through the body, it damages the immune system and organs. Ultimately, it causes levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This leads to severe, uncontrollable bleeding.

*If you are planning to go to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone for a business trip (or for any other reason)...
As MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) strongly warns against traveling to the region, you should be carefully considerate about travelling to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone. It is highly recommended to extend of travelling to the region.
