On Oct 16, the Sociolinguistics Division organized a lecture by Shinji Sanada, Professor Emeritus at Osaka University and current Professor at Nara University, entitled "Yilan Creole in Taiwan : A Japanese-lexicon Creole". About 30 people attended the lecture. Professor Sanada introduced findings from his fieldwork in Yilan which discovered the influence of Japanese on the indigenous language, giving rise to a language called Yilan Creole which has a unique grammatical structure different from the Atayal language and Japanese. This discovery is expected to provide a new perspective to the field of creole research, which has so far focused on the Western languages. The lecture was followed by the question and answer sessions where there were lively discussions among students and participants from both inside and outside of the University.
