Regular study meetings with the series title of "Contrastive Study of Japanese and Other Languages," where the latest achievements in comparative-contrastive research pairing Japanese and other languages are presented. For this academic year, the first study meeting was held at the Language Research Institute of the University on Saturday, December 19, with lectures by Haruko Kato on "Sentence-Initial Phrases Commonly Found in Japanese Translations of Chinese Novels"; Kiyoko Somiya on "Subject-Object Constructs in English and Japanese"; and Makoto Minegishi (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) on "Contrastive Analysis for Linguistic Typology -- with Japanese and Thai as an Example." With some fifty attendees, the meeting proved quite productive outcome. We will continue to approach researchers on and off campus to request that they present papers at this forum, which we intend to provide on an ongoing basis.
