Studies have been undertaken in various regions and academic disciplines on the subject of the multilingual and multicultural situations within nation states since such phenomena first came to light in the context of the process of globalization. Research on multilingual and multicultural situations has been advancing not only within the field of area studies, or the humanities and social sciences, but also in other fields which had been considered non-adjacent. However, there is little opportunity to share the fruits of this research or awareness of the issues raised, as these studies are often subdivided on the basis of region or discipline. Furthermore, it would also be desirable to develop research on the boundaries between these areas of research which would transcend existing analytical frameworks such as the ‘nation state’, ‘culture’ or ‘ethnicity’.
Bearing all these points in mind, this symposium aims to explore the possibility of constructing a new interdisciplinary analytical framework for transnational and transcultural comparative area studies by sharing the achievements and problems of the research on the multilingual and multicultural situation in each region and discipline, and also by reexamining existing theory, methodology, analytical categories and discourse. It also aims to examine the possibility and limits of implementing such new comparative area studies within higher education by means of the comparative analysis of ongoing research and education on the subject of multilingual and multicultural situations conducted in organs of higher education in several countries.
