A Report on the Lecture on Syrian Refugees in Adana, Turkey (June 13, 2017)

On June 13, 2017, the TUFS-GDC hosted a lecture by Emel Akcali, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies at Swansea University in Wales, the U.K., entitled "the New Aleppo: the Neighbourhood Experiences of Syrian Refugees in Adana, Turkey and the Limits of Refugee Governmentality." The audience was mainly graduate students; two GDC faculty members also attended the lecture. Before starting her lecture Dr. Emel talked a little about her academic background and experiences as well as her fields of interest. During her lecture she showed the audience some amazing pictures of Syrian refugees and their daily lives outside the refugee camps in the marginalized sections of the city of Adana. The content of her presentation was derived from her interviews with and observations from her field research on Syrian refugees in Adana. Though she did not talk about her analytical and theoretical framework, the content of her lecture was quite engaging and most of the attendees continued to follow her and ask their questions even after the lecture session ended. I found this lecture quite useful since it gave me a lot of useful hints on conducting and reporting the case studies in my own research and I am sure that it has been perceived similarly by those members of the audience whose fields of research are not refugee related.
