Rwandan Art Exhibition "Perspective" (Organized by Department of African Area Studies, School of International and Area Studies, and Sakai Seminar)
The organizer, Mr. Suganuma, runs the art gallery "PUNIO" in Kitasenju with a friend, and has exhibited the works of artists from various backgrounds.
I met Emmanuel when I was traveling across the African continent. After returning to Japan, I was inspired by his passion and the strength of his work, which led me to exhibit in Tokyo. The subject "Perspective" means not only "point of view" but also "perspective" in the realm of
painting.
It can be imagined that many students at this university have a close sense of distance to countries other than Japan. I believe that each student has created his or her own world according to various interests. However, being at a university like this, there are times when you may have to look at the infinite world and think about your own position in it. I myself feel a gap from the sensibility I had when I entered the university, in a good way.
I wonder what kind of perspectives not only the people at this university but also all the people who have seen me can have. Students, teachers, and all those involved alike have moments of introspection, and I think it is art that can accompany them. Whether it is "art" itself or the "thoughts" of people who live physically far away, when we encounter something that exists outside the contours of our own world, how do we become fascinated with each other? Through art that comes from afar, the subject matter is about how one's perspective sways, how one measures distance, and what position one chooses to stand in.
We would be very happy if this exhibition could be an opportunity for you to look at the paintings a little more closely and enjoyably try to grasp the perspective of yourself and your surroundings.
