TUFS Students Perform Portuguese-Language Play in Ota City, Gunma

December 12, 2025

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, second-year undergraduate students majoring in Portuguese at TUFS performed the Portuguese-language comedy “O diletante” by Martins Pena at the Ota City Learning and Culture Center in Gunma Prefecture. This performance was part of a cultural initiative under the comprehensive partnership agreement signed between TUFS and Ota City in November of this year.

On the day of the event, many attendees—including Brazilian residents and children from Ota City and Ōizumi Town—gathered to enjoy the Portuguese-language play accompanied by Japanese subtitles. Set in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro, the play humorously portrays the chaos surrounding a marriage proposal involving the daughter of an opera enthusiast. The students captivated the audience with a locally adapted version of the play, building on their experience from the TUFS GAIGOSAI festival.

This year, 4 Brazilian international students also joined the event, fostering deeper connections with TUFS students. After the performance, a social gathering provided an opportunity for warm and meaningful cultural exchange.

The event was supported by the TUFS Fund, co-hosted by Ota City, and endorsed by the Embassy of Brazil in Japan and the Instituto Guimarães Rosa. TUFS remains committed to promoting multicultural understanding and international exchange through regional collaboration.
