*Spring 2008 [#fc8e5384]
**Title: Automatic Analysis of Learner Language (LL) [#gddfd64b]
***Aims [#nd7fc2b1]
-To understand the basic concept and value of automatic analysis of LL
-To acquire skills of processing LL texts automatically
--basic concordancing
--POS tagging
--Syntactic parsing
--N-gram extraction
-Review the cutting-edge research into an automatic analysis of learner language
“Automatic”: natural language processing techniques applied for learner language analysis
-Papers based on the resources presented at the preconference workshop at CALICO 2008 with the same title as above:
-Only PPT slides are available, so understanding the slides may not be so easy, but we can try.
-The major purpose is to get to know how learner text is analyzed and how much automatization can be possible. Let's evaluate the method critically
-To learn the latest lexical profiling techniques using:
--WordSketch
--Wmatrix
***Activities [#xc397815]
***Programs [#rba48f5c]
-Find a partner.
-Initially, I thought I was going to use the materials presented at the CALICO preconference workshop on the same topic, but most of the papers were not as cutting-edge as I thought, so I changed my mind and will prepare my own materials.
-Choose one paper with PPT (no poster, please).
-Since there are some novice users of corpora, I would like to give a brief introduction on corpus linguistics, tools & resources available for language teachers.
-Look at the PPT file and figure out the meaning:
--If there is any important reference, read it.
--If there is any technical information you need, list it.
--Make your own comments and implications for SLA and ELT.
-Then we will focus on the automatic aspect of language analysis, using concordancers, with POS taggers, parsers, etc.
-Present your report with your partner using PPT.
-Finally we will briefly look at the lexical profiling software such as Sketch Engine and Wmatrix.
-Discuss the paper with your classmate.
