カナダでは、先住民を同化させる目的で寄宿学校を作り、
先住民の子供たちを親許から引き離し、
寄宿学校で生活させることによって、
「文明的な」文化と、「英語だけが」話せる文明人に
したてあげようとした。
Canada made residential schools so as to
assimilate First Nations' and Metis children.
The schools separated the pupils from their parents
and they tried to make "civilized" "English monolinguals"
out of the savage children by putting them in residential
schools.
これって、遠い話で、随分とひどいことをしたんだね？
と思いますか？

very mean?
もちろん、死なせてしまったことは言語道断だけれど、
Of course, the fact that the schools let children die
is totally unforgivable, but
・キリスト教徒にならせること
・英語だけが話せるようにすること
・先住文化・言語から切り離すこと
・To convert them Christians
・To make them speak only English
・To separate them from indigenous cultures and languages
これらは、全部「善意で」「子供たちのためになると思って」
されたことですよ。
were all done out of "good will." They thought it was "good for the chilren."
日本で考えると、
When you think about Japan,
・神道・仏教を押し付けること
・共通語だけが話せるようにすること
・アイヌ語、琉球諸語、方言から切り離すこと
・To impose them Shintoism and Buddhism
・To make them speak only the standard Japanese
・To make them separated from the Ainu, Ryukyuan languages etc.
and the dialects
寄宿学校では無いけれど、同じことやっているじゃないですか。
共通語が話せる主流派日本人に同化することが
日本社会の中では得策であるとの「善意」からきていますよね。
It was not done at residential schools, but "Japan" almost
did the same thing. To assimilate children to the mainstream
speaking standard Japanese, they thought, was
a good thing. There were "good wills."
もうちょっと穿っちゃうと、特にキリスト教徒の一部が
LGBT+に対して思い描いているプランって、
こういうものじゃないですか？
To pursue it a bit further, what especially some Christians plan
on the LGBT+ people is something like the following:
・LGBを異性愛者にすること
・Tを、生まれた時に認識された性別のままに生きるようにさせること
・To make LGB straight
・To make T stick to the sex/gender they were recognized with at birth
これで、彼らが「罪」から解放されると考えている。
The Christians think those who have LGBT+ tendencies
will straighten up an be free of "the sins."
寄宿学校で死んだというのではないけれど、
また、キリスト教徒に取り囲まれたLGBT+児童・青少年だけでは
ないけれど、
They were not let die at residential schools
and they were not all surrounded by Christian adults,
社会的な「圧」を感じる人は多いので、
そのせいで、精神を病んだり、自死を選んだりした人も
多いです。
LGBT+ children and youths still feel the "pressures" from the society.
And many acquire mental illnesses and some choose to take their own lives.
根底にある「押し付けの善意」は同じです。
There are "imposed good wills" at the roots all the same.
