Dr. Sonwa, our visiting professor, will give a lecture at Kyoto University

Fri, December 15, 2017

Dr. Denis Jean Sonwa, who is now staying at Japan as a visiting professor of African Studies Center - TUFS, will give a lecture about "Cocoa Agroforest Management and REDD+ Dynamics in Cameroon." It will be held at December 15, 2017 at Kyoto University.

REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestationand Forest Degradation in Developing Countries) was proposed at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) by a group of tropical countries headed by Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica. After COP 13 was held, new components were added: the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

In Cameroon, cocoa contributes to local livelihoods and national economy. Creation and management of cocoa farms are part of the forest cover transformation cycles leading to carbon stocks dynamics. Cocoa management thus have an important role to play on the way Cameroon is developing and implementing his REDD+ strategy. At the seminar, Dr. Sonwa will explain the national REDD+ dynamics and their linkage with cocoa agroforest management in Cameroon.
