The clock that he uncovered is no ordinary clock. Public clocks have been defining features of public life since the 1300s at least, if not before, and their bells would toll to inform workers and nobles alike that it was time to go out to the fields, time to come home from the fields, and time to make their daily devotions. This clock in particular, however, in lying underfoot, reminding those going to and fro in Maiden Lane that hustle and bustle as they may, time waits for no one.
