Course Guidance: Sustainability-Related Courses

April 2, 2026

Since AY2023, TUFS has been promoting the “The Training Program for Trans-Pacific Bridge Persons (TP-Bridge) Program” under the Inter-University Exchange Project. This program aims to develop students’ creative coordination skills—the ability to bridge differences in language, culture, and academic discipline, and to integrate diverse perspectives to solve complex problems.

As part of this initiative, two sustainability-related courses will be offered this spring semester.

These courses feature interdisciplinary learning made possible through collaboration with specialists from other universities and institutions. For TUFS students majoring in the humanities and social sciences, engaging with a wide range of perspectives, including those from STEM fields, is essential for understanding the challenges involved in building a sustainable society. These courses provide a valuable opportunity to explore how different disciplines can contribute to one another and generate solutions together, while also cultivating the ability to engage in dialogue across academic boundaries.

We look forward to your participation.

[Spring / Thursday 2nd Period] Introduction to Info-Powered Energy

Global Liberal Arts Program 19180093 Ecology and Science 1

Syllabus

This course is offered in collaboration with The University of Electro-Communications (UEC) and is taught in an omnibus format by faculty members and other experts from UEC. Students will learn the fundamentals of environmentally conscious energy technologies—how energy is generated, stored, and used efficiently—and examine how ICT is applied in these areas.

Through lectures by leading specialists in each field, students will explore the latest research and development as well as initiatives aimed at realizing a carbon-neutral society. The course encourages students to think from multiple perspectives about how technology can help address social challenges. In addition to classroom learning, site visits are also planned, offering students a chance to experience cutting-edge research and future visions emerging from industry.

[Spring / Friday 4th Period] Sustainability Studies: Perspectives and Actions Toward a Co-Creative Society

Global Liberal Arts Program 19180094 Ecology and Science 1

Syllabus

This course is taught in an omnibus format by faculty members and other experts from The University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST). Drawing on a wide range of research cases from RCAST, students will learn about the complexity of social issues and the importance of co-creation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Each class introduces talks by researchers and practitioners working at the forefront of their fields, helping students broaden the perspectives needed for problem-solving.

Students will also work collaboratively with classmates from different backgrounds, developing projects and presentations through discussion and the integration of different ideas. In doing so, they will build a foundation for becoming boundary-spanning individuals who can connect people and organizations across fields in the future. This course is recommended for students interested in social issues, public policy, research, and collaboration.
