Title
Economic Growth and Social Inclusion: A study of Gujarat

Abstract
Since the early 1990s India has opted for the path of neo-liberal economy to attain sustainable human development to reduce inequalities in terms of income and assets between citizens, as well as social groups. To what extent this has been achieved in the last decade with faster economic growth? What is the direction of growth is it inclusive or likely to be inclusive in the course of time? These questions will be examined focusing on Gujarat, one of the fastest growth states, and has received several awards for ‘good governance’. Moreover, Gujarat model of development has been projected for India’s development. Is economic growth and its direction is a recent phenomena under the BJP regime, Prime Ministerial candidate of the party for the future India? To what extent Gujarat model is for sustainable and inclusive? In the background of economic growth (Gross Domestic Product) in the state, nature of human development will be examined using indicators like condition of labour –wages and working condition, environment, health, education and welfare programmes – and inclusive for deprived communities such as tribals, dalits (former Untouchables) and Muslims. My overall argument will be that present economic growth in Gujarat is rooted in the historical development of society, and the model of growth is lopsided, lacks inclusive approach and unsustainable.
