Language Education 2012-2 Second semester (2 credits) †
Instructor Goals †
- As your instructor, I have three major goals: 1) To help you acquire critical thinking skills about various issues of English language teaching (ELT) in Japan, 2) To encourage your interest and involvement in collecting evidence, evaluating claims, and making specific claims over important issues related to ELT in Japan in the form of a public debate, and 3) To help you further develop communication and presentation skills in English.
Learning Objectives for the Course †
- By the end of the semester you should be able to:
- Describe and explain major issues in ELT in Japan and the world
- Compare and contrast alternative theories or claims over pros and cons of specific issues in ELT in Japan
- Evaluate major studies in terms of their methods, results, & implications
- Generate and explain examples that support your position in a debate
- Analyze and synthesizes concepts and ideas across topics, discussions, etc.
- Communicate ideas in speech in a clear & logical style
Grading Policy †
- Participation in the debate 50% (active role in a team)
- Individual scores in the debate 30% (total scores for each speech)
- Preparation for the debate 20% (including the handout)
Attendance †
- Class attendance is strongly recommended and will count toward your participation grade. Participation in the extra-class preparation activities will help you prepare for the debate and contribute to a victory of your team.

Possible topics for debates in the second semester †
- In the second semester, we would like to cover more concrete, pedagogical issues in ELT. Possible topics include:
- Vocabulary should be best acquired through extensive reading.
- Pronunciation should be taught using International Phonetic Alphabet (against using Katakana).
- Correcting errors should be abandoned in L2 writing instructions.
- Proficiency tests should be used instead of achievement tests for the term-end examination.
- English songs and games should be used to motivate students.
- Dictionaries should be abandoned in developing reading skills.
- Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is better than human instructions.
Planning †

Use of English †
- English is the official language in the classroom. However, you are allowed to use Japanese whenever you need it to prepare for a debate.
- During the extra-curricular preparation, the use of Japanese would be welcome.
- English is strictly used during the debate. All the comments should also be made in English.
言語教育学 2012年度 学部 前期2単位 †
目的 †
- 日本における英語教育はあまり成功している、という印象がない。では、具体的に何が問題なのであろうか？さまざまな問題点を取り上げ、１つ１つその論点を考察し、問題の本質や解決策を議論したい。
- 英語教育の諸問題を講義するだけでなく、実際にディベートやディスカッションの手法を用いて受講生に徹底的に「考える」ことを薦める。
- 「考える」だけでなく、資料を収集し、事実関係を明らかにしながら、問題の所在やその定義、解決策などを出来る限りデータに基づいて議論する姿勢を磨く。
