We got divisions by 60 from the ancient Babylonians (who also used a geometric form of that middle school instrument of torture, the quadratic formula, for levying taxes on farmers by calculating the area of their fields. It is perhaps thanks to their curiosity and ingenuity that we have progressed from taking grain from subsistence farmers to making sure that factory workers don't take a break a second longer than 15 minutes).
