Hey there! First of all, welcome to TUFS! I’m sure you’re going to have an amazing time in Tokyo, but I totally understand how overwhelming it can feel at first. Here are some tips from my own experience that I hope will help you adjust smoothly:
1. Cultural Differences
Respect for silence: Japanese culture values quietness in public places, especially in trains or on the campus. It might feel a bit strange at first, but it’s just how things work here.
Group mentality: Japanese culture often values the group over the individual, so being mindful of group dynamics in class or during club activities is important. It’s all about collaboration and harmony.
Punctuality: Always aim to be on time—Japanese people take punctuality seriously, and it’s something that will be very much appreciated at TUFS and in daily life.
2. Language Tips
Language exchange: There’s a language exchange club at TUFS that pairs international students with Japanese students who want to improve their English. It’s a great way to practice and build friendships at the same time!
Apps: In addition to textbooks, apps like Anki (for memorizing kanji) and HelloTalk (for speaking practice with natives) can be super helpful. Honestly, the more you immerse yourself in the language, the faster you’ll improve. Don't be afraid to make mistakes—it’s part of the learning process.
Japanese in daily life: Practice simple phrases like "すみません" (excuse me), "ありがとうございます" (thank you), and "はい" (yes) even in casual settings, as it helps you get comfortable with the language outside the classroom.
