The purpose of this paper is to investigate how today’s so-called digital generation Japanese language learners in the highly developed ICT environment use dictionary tools to find the most suitable word or expression.

Through the examinations conducted in 2015-2016, I found that there are two important factors to take into consideration.

First, using the dictionary tools does not fully solve all the grammatical issues such as the problem of transitive or intransitive verb, or appropriate voice of the sentences. The Japanese language may express a concept or situation in a different grammatical construction from the learners’ native language.

Second, to correctly apply the information found in the dictionary tools, it is important for the learners to go through the active process of referring to their acquired vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. The learners should build up their searching skills to cover the weakness of dictionary tools and avoid blindly applying information from dictionary tools.
