Improving Japanese Language Learners' Skills in Dictionary Use:
A Qualitative Inquiry Applying “SCAT” to an Analysis of the Survey of Foreign Students Dictionary Use

The purpose of this paper is to propose suggestions for improving Japanese language learners’ skills in dictionary use based on an analysis of responses to open-ended questions asked in a survey on dictionary use. For the analysis, I applied the qualitative method called “SCAT” (Steps for Coding and Theorization) to investigate what kind of problems dictionary users have and how they invent strategies to use the dictionaries effectively.

The survey was conducted via questionnaire and targeted foreign students learning Japanese language in the Japanese Language Program at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (JLPTUFS). 117 responses from speakers of various native languages and Japanese levels were collected. The survey asked students about their daily use of dictionaries and included two open-ended questions asking them to describe their own usage methods if they have any and explain awkwardness felt in using dictionaries. A total of 56 students replied to those questions.

Through an analysis of all answers collected, I formulated suggestions to encourage Japanese language learners according to language levels from elementary to upper-advanced. The points provide recommendations to improve learners’ effective use of dictionaries, particularly for improving writing skills. The objective of the suggestions is to facilitate sharing of information about the variety of dictionaries and dictionary applications among learners, and to clarify advantages and disadvantages of different dictionary types in order to help learners develop better strategies for solving problems encountered while using them.
