The Meanings and Functions of Japanese “…desu” Constructions as Observed in Recent TV News Programs and Weblogs:
“…wo tetteishuzai desu,” “…ni kitai desu,” and “…wo yoroshiku desu.”
The purpose of this paper is to consider the meanings and functions of Japanese “…desu” constructions as observed in recent TV news programs and weblogs. These constructions end in the form of “Verbal Noun(VN)/Noun(N) desu” in television news programs, and “Verbal Noun(VN) desu” or greeting words followed by “desu” such as “yoroshiku desu,” or “arigatoo desu,” etc. in weblogs.
In news programs these constructions are used by a reporter in order to announce a new change or development in the news story or to point out that the situation has entered some new, remarkable phase. In weblogs the constructions are used by bloggers to indicate their private feelings or make a request toward the reader without imposing mental pressure. For example, in the case of blogs it is observed that some “…desu” expressions are used in place of performative verbs, such as “kansha shimasu”, or to relay the request, gratitude, and apology typical of conventional expressions such as “yoroshiku onegaishimasu”, “arigatoo”, and “gomennasai”.
The asserting function of “desu” seems to be realized in different ways in each construction. The “Verbal Noun(VN) desu” construction is shared in both contexts with different Verbal Nouns.
