The Meaning and Function of the Japanese "Verbal Noun(VN)/Interjection desu" Construction As Observed in Recent Weblogs
The purpose of this paper is to consider the structure, meaning and usage of the Japanese construction "Verbal Noun(VN)/Interjection desu" as observed in recent Weblogs, reader letters to newspapers, and essays in magazines, as in the examples given below.
(1) Tsukutte kureta otto ni kansha desu.
(I thank my husband who made a good meal for me.)
(2) Amaku mite ita koto wo hansei desu.
(I have to carefully reconsider my underestimation of this matter.)
(3) Minasan no foroo wo yoroshiku desu.
(I would like to ask for your following on Twitter, thank you.)
Investigation of these sentences shows that one can characterize this construction syntactically, semantically and pragmatically in the manner below.
(4) This construction ends with the pattern "Verbal Noun(VN)/ Interjection desu" such as in kansha desu, kitai desu, hansei desu, yoroshiku desu and arigatoo desu.
(5) This construction is accompanied by complements that have particles such as wo and ni
(6) The sentence ending in -desu can be changed to the past tense form -deshita,but the negative form -dewa arimasen cannot appear.
(7) This construction is used typically by bloggers to show their request or feelings toward the reader without asserting mental pressure. That is, it represents the type of expression of a writer when talking to him/herself, similar to monologue.
(8) There are instances in which this construction appears at the end of the discourse and functions as a closing comment.
