Error Analysis of Intermediate Level Written Compositions:
Lexical and Semantic Education from Elementary through Intermediate Level Japanese

The purpose of this paper is to analyze lexical and semantic errors found in intermediate level students written compositions and to show their significance for elementary and intermediate levels of Japanese language education.

Here, I analyzed 244 compositions written during the year 2000 by intermediate level undergraduate students from the Japanese Language Center for International Students, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. I identified the following 4 types of lexical and semantic errors.

(1) Errors in lexical collocation

(2) Errors in conventional expressions

(3) Errors in Kanji (Chinese character) compound words

(4) Errors in synonymous words and phrases

This analysis concludes that an educational emphasis on lexical and semantic aspects, particularly those noted above, should be given the same attention in elementary through intermediate level Japanese education as is given to grammar education at these levels.
