On the Meaning of the Japanese Polysemic Verb tsuku

This paper describes the meaning of the Japanese polysemic verb tsuku.

Although many Japanese dictionaries list a variety of detailed meanings of this verb, little attention has been given to the relationships among them.

Here, as a first approximation to solving this problem, I focus on extracting some relatively schematic (abstract and general) meanings of this verb and their interrelationships. Such schematic meanings provide cognitively salient and conventionally entrenched nodes of the semantic network (polysemic structure) of this verb.

Through elaboration and specialization of schematic meanings and their relationships, we can grasp a whole semantic structure or "network" of this polysemic verb.
