About this project

>>Please access the Loanword Searchengine to search the loanwords<<

This personal project aims to present a compherensive and detailed information for loanwords in Indonesian. It began in the beginning of May, the time I started doing my research on Peranakan language spoken by Chinese descendants in Java. At the time being, I am collecting words originated from languages in China (e.g. Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese) which are now listed in Kamus besar bahasa Indonesia (A comprehensive dictionary of Indonesian) either as loanwords or Indonesian words without mentioning the source language.

There are sites for loanwords in Indonesian, such as Russell Jones' loan-words in Indonesian and Malay and World Loanword Database's Indonesian vocabulary. Each site has its own good points and word entries. However, there are some words, such as pisau 'knife' (Chinese: 匕首 bĭ shŏu), which cannot be found on those sites. My target is to finish collecting loanwords from Chinese languages as many as possible. Afterwards words originated from other languages, such as Dutch, Arabic, and Sanskrit, will be added.
