October Monthly Report
My first day at SOAS began by meeting with Ms. Oshikiri, Program Coordinator of TUFS London Office at SOAS. She provided information about available facilities, and showed me the library, media room, and so on. During our meeting, I obtained basic information from her about the SOAS system. Later that day, I went to register and get my card. The queue to receive a card was very long, so it was around evening when I completed my registration, and received the card.
The next day, the 4th of October, was my first time to enter the SOAS library. The first book in the library I read was Power and Powerlessness: Quiescence and Rebellion in an Appalachion Valley, by John Garenta. This book is about rebellion, and it focuses on class, and describes class divisions in society. With this, my SOAS journey began.
Further, this month, I met with Professor Andrew Gerstle, CAAS Coordinator at SOAS, to discuss my research topics, and receive his feedback. He gave me some research tips which will make my time at SOAS more productive. I also met my mentor professor, Dr. Lawrence Saez. I presented my topics to him and received his basic observations. Additionally, he informed me about classes and lectures of other professors that might be suitable or helpful for my research to audit. So far, I am attending the class "Political Economy of Violence, Conflict, and Development".
Moreover, this month, I had an opportunity to get together with the Nepali community on the eve of the Nepali Festival. During this time, I was able to hear and absorb the political discussion of the community, and informally hear people's views towards the Nepali polity. This allowed me to understand their basic perception of Nepal contemporary political discourse.
Finally, by the end of month, I was able to read the following books:
