During this month I have spent my time in between libraries. The SOAS library and the British library were my most frequent ones I have visited during the month. The British library has 14 million books, 920.000 journal and newspaper articles, 58 million patents, and 3 million sound recordings.

It's also during this month that I had another meeting with my mentor Dr. Raman where we discussed the progress of my research in here and my first journal article (one of the requirements for my PhD). She gave me valuable comments on how to revise my draft and make it more consistent.

While I am living here I tried to make some observations on people's life styles. If we take the public transportations for instance one can see a difference in the quality of people if I can say who use the public transportation depending on the time. To put it in a more simple way, if you take bus or train( Piccadilly or central lines) early in the morning (around 5 am) you can see that the majority of the people going to work are from poor classes, mainly colored people. Obviously they do jobs that white people don't usually want to do like cleaning or constructing ......etc.

If you get on the public transportation in late mornings (let's say around 10 or 11) you can see that most of the people are either European or British looking business men or students, plus of course other categories of people but mainly the former. In the evening it's the same thing, with people from less privileged classes going back home later than people from higher classes. This scene is not that clear in for instance the Japanese public transportation system.

Another important or worth noting observation one can make is that people (ethnically and racially different) here live in their own communities and they don't really socialize with other ethnic or racial groups; so you have blacks living and socializing together and the same is true for, Asians, Chinese, Turkish....etc. One interesting thing about Chinese in the UK is that they are not considered as Asians but rather as a race by themselves. I got to know this when I wanted to apply for swimming pool membership and in the application form you have to tick your race or ethnicity and it's there were I saw that Chinese are classified as a race by themselves.

Now to go back to the previous point I have pointed out to, which is the segregation of ethnically and racially different groups, our neighbors are for instance Turkish who immigrated to the UK since long time ago but yet none of their children could speak any word of English. One can wonder how these people can be integrated within the society when they don't even speak the language.
