Title The playground of Europe: Reassessing the ideology of prewar German and Austrian mountain sports and mountain films.
Details The mountains hold a special place in the public imagination of various nations. In particular with regard to Germany and Austria in the interwar period, the ideological aspects of this discourse have come under critical scrutiny. Does the drive towards high peaks reflect an ideological drive towards ultranationalism? This workshop reexamines the place and use of mountains in Germany and Austria between the wars under the aspects of sports, tourism, and culture.
Looking at Alpine tourism and the genre of so-called mountain films, the two talks mobilise alternative theoretical approaches to offer new perspectives on these contested discursive territories.
