“Song of Lahore” Screened at TUFS

February 15, 2019

On Saturday the 26th of January, “Song of Lahore”, a film about the struggles of master musicians in Pakistan, was screened at AGORA Global’s Prometheus Hall as a part of TUFS Cinema’s South Asian Cinema collection.
This film is a documentary that follows the twists and turns of the Sachal Jazz Ensemble, a group formed to bring back the withering musical culture of Pakistan and give art and its audiences a place to belong again, as they endeavor to make their music known to the world.
After the screening, a lecture was given by Kazuyuki Murayama (part-time lecturer at Rikkyo University). In his lecture, Mr. Murayama discussed what happened to the Sachal Jazz Ensemble after the events of the film, the fusion of Western and Pakistani music, and the cinematic aspects of the film.
This screening was attended by many people from both inside and outside of TUFS. From the audience many comments were heard such as “I had heard and been moved by the Ensemble’s jazz before, but through this screening I found out about their suffering, and it really left an impression” and “Professor Murayama’s talk was based on what he has experienced and seen, so it was easy to understand”.
