“Kaunas. The City of Sugihara and Japan” Screened at TUFS

On Tuesday the 13th of November 2018, a TUFS Cinema Lithuanian Film Screening, sponsored by the TUFS Lithuania Global Japan Office (GJO), The Centre for Asian Studies at Vytautas Magnus University and the Toshiba International Foundation, was held in Room 227 of the Research and Lecture Building. At the screening “Kaunas. The City of Sugihara and Japan”, a documentary film exploring the four figures who formed a bridge between Japan and Lithuania prior to World War II, was shown.
Before the screening, speeches were given by Mr. Algimantas Misevičius, Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Japan, and Mr. Keisuke Omori, President of the Toshiba International Foundation. Following this, an introduction to the film was given by Dr. Aurelijus Zykas, head of the Centre for Asian Studies at Vytautas Magnus University and one of the creators behind the film. Dr. Aurelijus Zykas also works as the coordinator of the Global Japan Office (GJO) at Vytautas Magnus University, an office established by TUFS to promote research on Japan and Japanese language education.
The screening attracted many guests from both inside and outside of TUFS. Guests left comments such as “Lithuania feels so familiar to me now”, “I am glad I got to learn about all the connections between Lithuania and Japan aside from Chiune Sugihara”, and “it was such a good film, I want them to screen it everywhere”.
