Lively Diplomat Lecture Series – Former Ambassador to Portugal Gives Special Lecture

On Wednesday the 24th of October (2018), former Japanese ambassador to Portugal, Mr. Hiroshi Azuma, gave a special lecture titled “Portuguese and Japanese Diplomacy” in Room 111 of the Research and Lecture Building as part of the “Lively Diplomat Lecture Series” (held by the Information Center for Social and International Collaboration).

Portugal has the longest running relations with Japan in Europe, and this year marked 475 years since the Portuguese first landed on Japanese soil.

Mr. Azuma mostly talked about how Japan joined the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa - CPLP) as an observer the following July after Prime Minister Abe’s 2014 visit to Portugal, and also discussed economic and cultural topics as well as political ones. He also said he could see a new horizon dawning for the two countries.

The lecture was attended by around 70 people from both inside and outside of TUFS, with majority of these being TUFS Portuguese majors. At the following question and answer session, participants showed their keen interest by asking questions about the diplomat career and Portugal.
